Projects, Continued Reid JS October 31, 2023 Happy halloween 🎃

I love projects. Well, I love starting projects. Finishing them is a different story. It's really hard to see them through, and sometimes your gut tells you to end it. There is an opportunity cost, and these consume the most resource we own: our free time.

One ongoing project is bay2lake.com, a ~100km relay race starting in San Francisco every year in mid-september. Me and my friend Riley have coordinated it for the past 2 years. I've been doing distance running as a way to meet people for the past, jeez must be 10 years, cause it seems like everyone does it. Bay2Lake is a long distance relay and we do an overnight after the event. We're capping it at about 50 people with no intention of growing it any larger. I'm a bit afraid of the liability and legality of hosting an athletic event. But we are running it entirely as a nonprofit, in fact thus far we've only lost money from it, and we only invite friends/friends of friends so I'm not too afraid of anybody being litigious if they have a bad time. It's annoying that there is that risk, when people are grown adults afterall, but some people (not most, some) expect that they are absolved from all risk during a race for some reason. We definitely try to promote safety as our #1 priority, but it is a competitive event and some people go ALL OUT, despite there being no "real" reward afterall. Human nature to want to beat your friends, I guess.

One project that I've put into 'stasis', or paused work on, hazysurf.com. I enjoy surfing, swimming, camping, boating, biking, snowboarding, and some other types of adventure sports. I also don't own a car (struggles of city life), which can make it difficult to get out to the ocean or the mountains. The concept is it's a "friend carpool app" that you can use to organize trips with friends or friends of friends. I lost interest in this because eventually I accumulated enough friends that rides weren't ever really an issue. It's a bit of a catch-22, if you are someone people enjoy the company of, you won't really need an app like that, because they probably won't mind the company when they go to some remote destination - afterall it's much safer and more fun to bring friend(s). There are also more than enough group texts and car rental apps and ride share apps already. That project may never come to fruition and that's OK.

Ok, that's enough reflection for today. Moving forward, I would like to start a low-risk community-focused project, I think the relay race shows good potential, but the health risk worries me too much to make it any bigger. The next question is what community would I like to engage with? I have the podcast as a good platform for getting content out, maybe expand bay area weekend to a wider audience? Email blog@hazybridge.com if you have ideas or thoughts on this, thanks for reading.
